Sandefjord is a city and a municipality in Vestfold. Sandefjord is located at the end of the Oslo Fjord. With peninsulas �ster�ya and Vester�ya, the municipality has a coastline of the entire 146 km, which, together with all the beaches as well as cabin and camping tourists make Oslo a summer city. Sandefjord is by population the largest municipality in Vestfold at the start of the year 2009.

The municipality borders in the north to Stokke, in the west to Anderson, in the south of Larvik and in the east to T�nsberg Fjord and Tj�me. Sandefjord has a small exclave, Himberg, which is enclosed in Larvik, near the municipal border.
The town of Sandefjord has 41,811 inhabitants as of 1 January 2011.

Sandefjord is known for shipping and chemical industries. History of shipbuilding and whaling was reflected in the local business community including Jahre oil and fat industry, Framn�s Mechanical V�rksted and Jotun paint factory. Jotun is currently the largest company in Sandefjord.

Gokstad ship was found near the town in 1880 and is now in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The Gokstad Ship copy "Gaia" and the whale ship "Southern Actor" has Sandefjord as home port. Full Rigged Ship "Christian Radich" was built at Framn�s Mechanical V�rksted in the city. It was also Ernest Shackleton's expedition ship "Endurance" built in 1912.

Sandar municipality was merged with Sandefjord in 1968.
