Brittany Anne Murphy (born Brittany Bertolotti; Nov. 10, 1977 (33 years ago)) is an American actress and recording artist. She has starred in movies such as Just Married; Clueless; Girl, Interrupted; 8 Mile; Sin City; The Dead Girl; Uptown Girls; Happy Feet; Riding in Cars with Boys and Spun. Murphy's debut album is set to be released in 2009 (last year).

Early life

Murphy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Sharon Murphy, who is of Irish and Eastern European descent, and Angelo Bertolotti, an Italian American. Murphy's parents divorced shortly after her birth, and she was raised in Edison, New Jersey, and Burbank, California, by her single, working-class mother; she has had little contact with her father since the divorce. Murphy was raised a Baptist and attended a Lutheran school, but is now a non-denominational practicing Christian.

When she was nine years old, Murphy landed a singing role in a musical version of Les Misérables, and had signed on with a manager by the time she turned thirteen. Her mother, Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer when Brittany was 15. She survived after having a double mastectomy.

Acting

Murphy landed her first job in Hollywood when she was fourteen, starring as Brenda Drexell in the TV series Drexell's Class. She then went on to play Molly Morgan in the short lived The Torkelsons spinoff Almost Home. In the Frasier episode "Give Him The Chair", she played a school child in a play of "10 Little Indians" who cannot remember her lines. She also had a small role in Season 3 of Boy Meets World as Topanga's best friend Trini, as well as guest starred on an episode of Nash Bridges. She was also the lead singer of the band Blessed With Soul in the early 1990s, and was at one time signed on to play late singer Janis Joplin in a biography, but the movie was not made because of legal disputes over music rights. Murphy has since starred in many successful films, including Clueless (1995, 15 years ago), Girl, Interrupted (1999, 11 years ago), Don't Say a Word (2001, 9 years ago), the TV adaption of the novel The Devil's Arithmetic (2001, 9 years ago), 8 Mile (2002, 8 years ago) and Uptown Girls (2003, 7 years ago) as well as many lesser-known films, such as Spun (2003, 7 years ago). She has also appeared on several TV series including the first season of Sister, Sister and as the voice of Luanne Platter (as well as the younger version of Joseph Gribble) on the long-running animated series King of the Hill.

In 2001 (9 years ago), Murphy cameoed in the music video for Wheatus' single "A Little Respect".

She most recently appeared in the movies Little Black Book (2004, 6 years ago), which was considered a critical and commercial failure, and the critically acclaimed Sin City (2005, 5 years ago). Also in 2005 (5 years ago), she appeared in the promo video for Tears for Fears' single Closest Thing to Heaven, and in Aug. 2005 (5 years ago), Brittany co-presented on UK music show CD:UK alongside Holly Willoughby.

Her most recent projects include The Ramen Girl and Across the Hall. She will be reprising her role as Shellie in Sin City 2. She has recently been cast in the Lifetime TV movie,"Tribute", as the main character, Cilla.

Music

In the Spring of 2006 (4 years ago), Paul Oakenfold along with Brittany Murphy released the single "Faster Kill Pussycat", with the album A Lively Mind which was released on Jun. 6 in the United States. The song has become a club hit, and hit number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Dance Club Play chart. It also hit number seven in the UK singles chart in Jun. 2006 (4 years ago). She dabbled in music again with the release of her movie Happy Feet, in which she covered Queen's classic "Somebody to Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland".

Brittany is currently working on her debut album, which is inspired by synth-pop sound. She is working with various producers and DJs including with Paul Oakenfold, Chris Cox, Max Martin and Timbaland. The album will be released adventitiously in 2009 (last year).

Personal life

Actor Jonathan Brandis was Murphy's high school prom date. She dated Ashton Kutcher (6 walls), who was her co-star in Just Married. Once engaged to talent manager Jeff Kwatinetz, in dec. 2005 (5 years ago), Murphy became engaged to Joe Macaluso, a production assistant she met while working on her film, Little Black Book. In Aug. 2006 (4 years ago), they ended their engagement. In May 2007 (3 years ago), Murphy married screenwriter Simon Monjack in a private Jewish ceremony. A month before the wedding, Monjack had been arrested and was facing deportation due to visa expiration.

During 2005 (5 years ago), Murphy was the spokesmodel for Jordache jeans.

In 2006 (4 years ago), Murphy was voted 36th in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women List, 29th in Celebrity Sleuth magazine's 25 Sexiest List and in May of the same year, Maxim named Murphy #49 on its annual Hot 100 List.

"Honestly, I don't know how much longer I have in this game," the 37-year-old MC told Vibe. "I'm always going to love hip-hop. But how much longer am I going to still do it? I couldn't give you an answer. But the day that this is not better than the last will probably be the day I stop." Despite his love for the game, the Detroit native said that even if he were to continue to get in the studio, he doubts he would release the music as a middle-aged MC. "I do love it so much. But even if I was rapping at 50, I don't know if I would put it out. I know it always makes me feel better to lay things to tape, and — 'lay the tape.' See, I'm old school," he said. In the August/September issue, Em also proves he can be his own worst critic, calling some of his previous material "mediocre." But he said that it's the fans who will ultimately decide his hip-hop fate. "The fans might say the sh-- is garbage. You don't how long people are going to want you around ... Realistically, if I don't rap, what the f--- am I going to do? It's too late to just be unfamous right now at this point," he admitted. Slim Shady is probably right about it being too late for him to fade into obscurity, but by the looks of things he probably has no reason to worry about losing his fanbase. His latest effort, Recovery, is smashing the competition and it sits atop next week's Billboard albums chart with sales of 133,000 pushing it past the 2.1 million mark in just eight weeks.
