Information about Michael Jackson's This Is It

Michael Jackson's This Is It is a 2009 (last year) American concert movie documenting Michael Jackson's rehearsals of the concert series of the same name (scheduled to start on Jul. 13, 2009 (last year), but cancelled because of his death on Jun. 25, 2009 (last year)), both on stage and behind the scenes. The movie shows Jackson mentoring his team for the 50 shows, as well as him creating, developing, and ultimately staging the high-tech performances. The film's director Ortega confirmed that when Jackson had filmed footage of himself rehearsing that he never had the intention of releasing it to the public, but after Jackson's death, it was agreed that the movie be made and released for Jackson's fans. The footage was filmed at The Forum and the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Despite originally being set for an Oct. 30, 2009 (last year), release date, the film's release date was rescheduled for Oct. 28, 2009; due to a strong demand by Jackson's fans. The was given a wide worldwide release and a limited two-week theatrical run from Oct. 28, to Nov. 12, 2009 (last year). Tickets went on sale a month early on Sep. 27, 2009 (last year), to satisfy a high anticipated demand.

Since the confirmation of the film, AEG Live had faced criticism mostly consisting of theories that they'd only made the movie solely for them to be able to make a profit off Jackson. Multiple members of Jackson's family had confirmed that they didn't support the movie and some family members went as far as to try to stop the movie agreement in August. The movie has also been surrounded by multiple controversies, including a Jackson body double hoax; which Sony denied, and an outrage from Jackson fans; with some going as far as to start a protest against the film.

On Aug. 10, 2009 (last year), Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved a deal between Michael Jackson's estate, concert promoter AEG Live, and Sony Pictures. This allowed Sony Pictures to edit the hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage needed to create the motion picture. Sony subsequently paid $60 million for the movie rights. The trailer first premiered during the 2009 (last year) MTV Video Music Awards on Sep. 13, 2009 (last year), along with the simultaneous launching of the film's official website. To date, the movie has broken numerous box office records via tickets sales worldwide. The movie was released to positive reviews from both critics and Jackson fans, negative responses mainly consisted of people having felt that the movie was made just to profit off Jackson's death and that Jackson wouldn't have wanted the movie released because he was a "perfectionist".

Content

The movie opens with a short text introduction stating the purpose of the footage and its intent "For the fans...". After short dialogues from various dancers, Kenny Ortega is heard talking through the original concert opening sequence involving a body suit made from screens which display fast clips and images (wallpaper) with bright intensity from which Jackson emerges on stage. Immediately after this, Jackson begins "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" first solo, which pauses half-way through and a small snippet of Jackson singing his song "Speechless" acapella is shown. Jackson is then joined by dancers and completes the first number. A short clip showing rehearsals of the "toaster" mechanism is shown before rehearsal footage of "Jam" is played. This plays directly into the green screen adaption of soldiers dancers for "Bad" which are also used for "They Don't Really Care About Us" which is shown next. From here, the movie shows Michael directing Ortega and his band for his solo rehearsal performance of "Human Nature" which he performs acapella, then acoustic and finally with full band. Green screen rehearsals for the video vignette for "Smooth Criminal" come next, with dress rehearsals of the song following, including parts of the vignette intertwined with the dancing. Jackson is seen next directing his musical team for the cues in his song "The Way You Make Me Feel." Jackson then performs a rehearsal with dancers which he alters and changes as he goes. A small animatic introducing the Jackson 5 is shown afterwards, and Michael then rehearses "I Want You Back", "The Love You Save", "I'll Be There" and "Shake Your Body." Jackson stops only to report problems with his earpiece. After this, Jackson sings with one of his back up singers on his duet song "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" in which he sings at full strength, directing his partner as he goes. The filming for the "Thriller" vignette is then shown with Jackson and Ortega watching with 3D glasses. Jackson is then seen rehearsing "Thriller" with the vignette intertwined like that in "Smooth Criminal."

During the dance sequence, puppets are suspended in the audience aisles while Jackson emerges from a robotic spider originally seen in the vignette. Jackson and Ortega rehearsing the cherry-picker is seen next, along with Jackson rehearsing "Beat It." Jackson creates the ending he wants for the song, a long drum build up in which he tears off his jacket and burns it. Footage of the show's aerialists rehearsing to the instrumental of "Who Is It" is shown next, followed by the Jackson and his band rehearsing "Black or White," in which he allows guitarist Orianthi Panagaris to take centre stage to finish with a high guitar rift. The video-sequence for "Earth Song" is shown next, featuring a small girl who wanders through an abundant forrest, falls asleep, and wakes up to find the forrest destroyed by man. Jackson then performs the song both onstage and using the cherry-picker, with his voice being heard at the end telling of the dangers of Global Warming and the lack of reversible time left. Afterwards, Michael is seen conversing with Ortega, his dancers and band about the shows, trivial dance moves and his hopes for the concert series. He then performs a quick version of his song "Billie Jean" featuring an extra dance sequence. Michael is then seen talking to all crew members and wishing everyone the best for the London performances. As a sound check, Jackson performs "Man In The Mirror" with strong backing vocals. The movie ends with Jackson with his arms extended on stage with the message: "Michael Jackson (25 walls) King of Pop Love Lives Forever"

Development

The film's director and choregrapher; Ortega stated that the rehearsal footage and concept of making a movie to document the preparation of the concerts had come about as "an accident". Ortega stated the movie was pieced together from "private footage" of Jackson and the concerts crew rehearsing and that before Jackson's death, was never intended to be released to the public, or even in general. "The recordings were made so we could use them, then the tapes were destined for Michael [Jackson]'s private library. They have a real unguarded honesty to them." Ortega stated that he had gotten the idea to use the rehearsal footage from Jackon's fans after his death: "At first I got so many messages from fans around the world asking to see the shows, asking to see the footage and eventually I realised the journey wasn't over and we had to do this," and Ortega also stated that the movie was made only for the Jackson fans: "[The film] is for the fans and the movie will show the development and intentions of the show, and the concert as it moved closer to London."

Deal with AEG Live

On Aug. 10, 2009 (last year), Mitchell Beckloff, who is a Superior Court Judge, officially approved the deal between Columbia Pictures (film distributor) and AEG Live (the concerts promoter) for Columbia to be able to purchase and distribute rehearsal footage of Jackson and the rehearsal crew for the film. The deal also included a merchandising agreement with Bravado International Group - the company is a division of Universal Music Group that is owned by Vivendi - so that they can distribute and and sell "Jackson-themed products". Columbia had reportedly paid 60 million (£35 million) for rights to the rehearsal footage in court documents that were filed. The papers filed had also reportedly stated that Jackson's estate will get 90% of the profits and that AEG will get the remaining 10% from the film's revenue. In the agreement, Columbia and AEG Live both agreed in the deal that the final version of the movie should be no longer than 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes), and that the movie must attain a PG rating. The contract also stated that the movie is not allowed to show footage of Jackson that shows him in a negative way, stating that: "Footage that paints Jackson in a bad light will not be permitted and "Under the terms of the proposed contract, the movie will have to be screened for Jackson’s estate and cannot include any footage that puts the superstar in a bad light." AEG stated that they'd had given Columbia over "100 hours of footage of preparations and rehearsals for the shows" as part of the deal."" The court papers stated that in order for the movie to be released to the public the final version of the movie must be screened to representatives for Jackson's Estate no later than Oct. 2, 2009 (last year).

Reception

The movie currently holds an 80% 'Fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 123 reviews. Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, reported that reviews were "generally favorable", with an average rating of 67 based on 30 reviews.

Michael Jackson Biographer Releasing Movie About Pop Star's Final Days MTV News - 3 days ago
'Gone Too Soon' will include video and audio recordings of the King of Pop, as well as interviews with his manager and others.By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Dave Benett/ Getty Images Michael Jackson biographer Ian Halperin, who last year released a chronicle of the King of Pop's gradual late-period decline titled, "Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson," is prepping an accompanying documentary, due out this summer. According to Variety, Halperin is finishing work on an 88-minute documentary titled "Gone Too Soon" that makes use of the more than 300 hours of footage he shot inside the pop icon's camp. The film is slated to be unveiled at next month's MIPTV conference in Cannes, France, and is set for a theater run in Canada and France on June 25, the one-year anniversary of Jackson's death. There is no word yet on a U.S. release. "Unmasked" is based on five years of investigative reporting by Halperin, who told MTV News last year that he started out with the intention of finding proof that the repeated allegations of child molestation lodged against the eccentric pop singer were true, but ended up believing that Jackson was a victim of his own success and predatory opportunists. Jackson was acquitted of child molestation and other charges in 2005 and settled with an alleged victim in 1993. Film footage reportedly includes video and audio recordings of the reclusive Jackson, as well as interviews with the singer's manager, chef, spiritual adviser, hairstylist, trainer, protective agent and attorney. None of the other members of Jackson's family are involved in the movie, though Halperin said they are aware of it. Though it depicts some of the more controversial chapters in Jackson's life, Halperin described the movie as "a balanced tribute to the King of Pop ... This is the film Michael and his fans deserve." Halperin is credited with breaking the news in December 2008 that Jackson was in ill health and predicting that the singer would be dead within six months. The performance documentary "Michael Jackson's This Is It," which featured footage of Jackson's final rehearsals for a planned comeback series of concerts in London, was released last fall and shattered box-office records for a music film. Country star Gretchen Wilson will play a special benefit concert for the TJ Martell Foundation in Anaheim on March 10. To all appearances, Gretchen Wilson went overnight from talented obscurity to phenomenon. Her first single, “Redneck Woman,” spent six weeks at #1; her debut album, Here For The Party, sold more than five million copies; she won across-the-board awards including a Grammy and ACM, CMA and AMA nods for best female vocalist; and she toured to large and raucous crowds around the world. Her second CD, All Jacked Up, rode enthusiastic reviews to platinum status as Gretchen’s accomplishments continued to stack up. Her third, One of the Boys, solidified her position as one of contemporary country’s most original and multi-faceted female artists, a woman in whom ambition and ability come together in every aspect of her career. In 2009, Gretchen launched her own record label, Redneck Records, and her first single release, “Work Hard, Play Harder,” is reminiscent of the music that brought her to the dance. Michael Jackson 'Earth Song' Grammy Tribute Focuses On His Love Of The Planet MTV News - 49 days ago
Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Carrie Underwood and more singers take part in the 3-D tribute.By Shaheem Reid Smokey Robinson, Usher and Carrie Underwood perform Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" at the 2010 Grammys Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images So much emotion came from the Michael Jackson tribute during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night (January 31). Lionel Richie — Jackson's longtime friend and "We Are The World" collaborator — introduced the set, saying Michael "dared to believe that he could make the world a better place." As the performance began, we heard the timeless icon's voice talk about the how he hated pollution and destruction of the earth. "That stuff really bothers me," Jackson said in the recording. "That's why I write these kinda songs, to give some kind of awareness and awakening and hope to people. I love the planet. I love trees. When the colors are changing in the leaves, I love it." The recording led into Jackson's "Earth Song." Usher followed up MJ's vocals, walking onstage singing, "Did you ever stop to notice/ All the blood we've shed before?/ Did you ever stop to notice/ The crying Earth, the weeping shores?" "What have we done to the world?" Jackson's voice came back in. Behind the performers was a mini-movie, which was featured in the concert film "Michael Jackson's This Is It," playing on huge screens. The film was in 3-D, and you could see celebrities in the audience such as Beyoncé and Rihanna wearing 3-D glasses. "What about flowering fields?" Carrie Underwood came out singing. "Is there a time?/ What about all the dreams/ That you said was yours and mine?" Jennifer Hudson then joined in, and Smokey Robinson came next. As the song ended, they all turned, with their backs facing the audience, to look at photos of the late Jackson on screens that hung above the stage. Jackson's children, Prince Michael and Paris, accepted a Grammy lifetime-achievement award for their father after the performance. "Our father was always concerned about the planet and humanity," Prince said. "Through all his hard work and dedication, he has helped many charities and donated to all of them. Throughout his songs, his message was simple: love. We will continue to spread his message and help the world. Thank you. We love you, Daddy." Lenny Kravitz Says 'I Don't Know' Who Leaked Michael Jackson Song MTV News - 76 days ago
'It was done by two people who had respect for each other and who love music,' he says of the track he recorded with the late King of Pop.By Gil Kaufman Lenny Kravitz in the TwitVid posted on Monday Photo: Lenny Kravitz/ TwitVid The portion of a previously unheard Michael Jackson track that leaked on Monday, "Another Day," was not supposed to be released and is not the finished version of a song the late pop icon recorded with Lenny Kravitz several years ago. Seemingly plopped down in the middle of a lush tropical forest, Kravitz posted a video message on Monday to respond to the news about the leaked tune. Wearing a plaid shirt, jeans, sunglasses and sporting a grown-out mini-afro, Kravitz explained, "I just want to reach out to you so I can set the record straight regarding the Michael Jackson track 'Another Day.' "As you know and have heard, part of the song leaked — not by me, because mine has been locked up in a vault since we recorded it," he said. "The version that's out is a minute and 30 seconds, roughly, of the track — not mixed, but it is the track." Kravitz said he has no idea who the DJ speaking over the track is — one person identifies themselves as "Kels" and his partner, whose name sounds like DJ Thucky, or Ducky — nor how they obtained the music. "I don't know what their purpose is, but that person has nothing to do with the track," he said, noting that the song was recorded by himself and MJ and that he wrote, produced and played all of the instruments on the tune. "It was one of the most amazing musical experiences that I've ever had," he added. "It was done by two people who had respect for each other and who love music — that was it." According to TMZ, Jackson's label Sony Music and his estate lawyers are working to get the unfinished song pulled from the Internet as soon as possible. Spokespeople for Jackson could not be reached for comment at press time. Kravitz said he hopes the situation gets straightened out as soon as possible so fans can enjoy the finished track in its entirety. "That's all being worked out as I sit here in the bush," he said, as a wind whipped up the palm fronds surrounding him. "I'll get back to you as soon as I have more information." 'Michael Jackson's This Is It' DVD To Hit Shelves On January 26 MTV News - 111 days ago
Concert documentary will feature an hour of extra footage on DVD, even more on Blu-Ray.By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson's This Is It Photo: Epic First, Michael Jackson fans couldn't wait for the "Michael Jackson's This Is It" documentary to begin its limited run in theaters around the globe. Then, even before it hit thousands of screens, they began clamoring for a DVD release date of the final artistic statement from the self-proclaimed King of Pop. That wish was granted over the Thanksgiving weekend, when Sony Pictures announced that "This Is It" will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on January 26. According to Home Media Magazine, the DVD version will include an hour of extra footage in the form of featurettes on the making of the film, costumes, dancer auditions and the performers' memories of Jackson. The Blu-Ray will contain that footage, plus an additional half hour that includes alternate versions of videos of "Smooth Criminal" and "Thriller." "This Is It" was originally scheduled for a two-week limited run in theaters, with hopes of a DVD version in stores by Christmas. But due to the popularity of the movie and complaints from theater owners that the Christmas release window was too soon, the run was extended by a month and the DVD release was pushed back, according to the Los Angeles Times. The film has taken in more than $70 million at the U.S. box office since opening on October 28. In other "This Is It" news, the film did not make it onto the short list of 15 films eligible for Best Documentary Oscar nominations, because it was not released before the September 30 for that category. But it is reportedly still a potential contender in other categories, including Best Picture. Check out everything we've got on "Michael Jackson's This Is It." New Moon and The Blind Side combined to help make their opening weekend the second biggest on record, in terms of overall box office take. Top 10 Films for the Weekend Ending November 22 (Estimates) 1) New Moon - $140,700,000 2) The Blind Side - $34,500,000 3) 2012 - $26,500,000 4) Planet 51 - $12,600,000 5) Disney's A Christmas Carol - $12,200,000 6) Precious - $11,000,000 7) The Men Who Stare at Goats - $2,700,000 8) Couples Retreat - $1,900,000 9) The Fourth Kind - $1,700,000 10) Michael Jackson's This Is It - $1,500,000 (Photo &copy Summit Entertainment) Follow Me on TwitterBox Office Report - New Moon Has Huge Opening Weekend originally appeared on About.com Hollywood Movies on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 at 14:42:51.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Bon Jovi's The Circle Hits The #1 Spot On Billboard MTV News - 121 days ago
Britney Spears' Singles Collection lands at lackluster #22.By Gil Kaufman Bon Jovi's The Circle Photo: Island Music fans appear to have taken a break from holiday shopping last week, as sales of the top albums took a noticeable dip, and the latest #1 debut did just about half the business Carrie Underwood's Play On did the week before to hit #1. Jersey icons Bon Jovi take over the top spot on next week's Billboard albums chart with their latest, The Circle, which sold just about 163,000 copies according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was just over half of what the band's previous #1, the country-tinged Lost Highway, did in its first week in 2007. It was enough, however, to keep tenor Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas at #2 (136,000) and to knock Underwood down to #3 (128,000) as her second-week sales plummeted by 60 percent. The only other debut in the top 10 is from righteous metallers Flyleaf, whose Memento Mori lands at #8 on sales of 56,000. The rest of the top 10: the "Michael Jackson's This Is It" soundtrack (#4, 117,000), Taylor Swift's Fearless (#5, 91,000), Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 32 (#6, 68,000), Michael Bublé's Crazy Love (#7, 58,000), Glee: The Music Vol. 1 (#9, 56,000) and the soundtrack to "New Moon" (#10, 53,000). Among other new releases, Switchfoot touch down at #13 with Hello Hurricane (39,000), and Dashboard Confessional's Alter the Ending hits #19 (30,000). Buzz rapper Wale sneaks in at #21 with Attention Deficit, followed by Britney Spears' Singles Collection at #22 (27,000). Quite a few country acts got a bump after winning big at the CMA Awards, including Lady Antebellum, whose self-titled disc shoots up 130 percent and 13 spots to #11 (45,000), and best "new" artist Hootie and the Blowfish singer Darius Rucker, whose country disc Learn to Live jumps more than 20 spots to #27 (23,000). Other country gainers that performed or won on the show included the Zac Brown Band, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean. Otherwise, the chart has been pretty quiet, with masked party rappers Hollywood Undead slamming to #29 with the remix CD/live DVD Desperate Measures (21,000), Jason Mraz a bit behind at #35 with the live disc Jason Mraz's Beautiful Mess (16,000) and an AC/DC box set, Backtracks, debuting at #39 (16,000). Some of last week's top debuts had serious falls. The Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits stumbles 17 spots to #28 after business fell by 50 percent (22,000). Weezer's Raditude shed more than 73 percent of its debut business to nose-dive 25 spots to #32 with sales of 18,000. And Slayer's World Painted Blood skidded 67 percent, dropping 32 spots to #44 on sales of 13,000. The deck should get shuffled next week with the long-awaited release of 50 Cent's Before I Self-Destruct, the latest from Norah Jones, John Mayer, Leona Lewis and OneRepublic, as well as debuts from Justin Bieber and Kris Allen. Carrie Underwood Rules Billboard Again With Play On MTV News - 130 days ago
'Glee' soundtrack debuts strongly at #4; Weezer's Raditude comes in at #7.By Gil Kaufman Carrie Underwood Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Carrie Underwood will score her second #1 debut in a row next week, when her third album, Play On, tops the Billboard 200 chart, thanks to sales of 318,000. While the strong debut was cause for celebration, sales were more than 200,000 below the first week bid for the former "American Idol" champ's smash 2007 Carnival Ride disc, which moved more than 527,000 in its first week. Regardless, the numbers were more than enough to beat out the #2 album, the soundtrack to "Michael Jackson's This Is It," which will slip from the top perch in its second week thanks to a nearly 50 percent dip to 196,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. But the double disc of mostly previously released material from the late pop star has easily crossed the half-million mark in two weeks and is likely to have strong sales thanks to the extension of the theatrical run of the documentary. The top 10 will get some other fresh blood, including a #3 bow for tenor Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas (149,000) and a #4 debut for the soundtrack to the hit choir competition show "Glee," which moved more than 113,000 copies after dominating the iTunes singles download charts for weeks. Also dropping in are the latest in the hits series Now That's What I Call Music, Vol. 32 at #5 (102,000) and Weezer's Raditude, which lands at #7 (66,000). The rest of the top 10: Taylor Swift's Fearless (#6, 70,000), Michael Bublé's Crazy Love (#8, 59,000), Sting's If on a Winter's Night (#9, 59,000) and the "New Moon" soundtrack (#10, 52,000). Just outside the top tier, the Foo Fighters hit #11 with their first greatest-hits compilation (44,000), followed by metal stalwarts Slayer with the cheerily titled World Painted Blood (#12, 41,000). The news was not great for reunited rockers Creed, whose first album in eight years, Full Circle, drops 12 spots to #14 in week two, after sales plummeted 65 percent to 39,000. Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 has fallen out of the top 10 for the first time since its debut two months ago, dropping to #15 (38,000). Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas had a decent debut week for his first solo effort, Phrazes for the Young, which comes in at #35 (14,000), two spots ahead of the Live at Reading disc from '90s grunge icons Nirvana (#37, 14,000). After multiple delays, former R&B It Girl Amerie lands softly at #46 with In Love&War (13,000), which puts her just ahead of singer Ryan Leslie, whose Transition musters a #50 bow on sales of 12,000. The second album from Southern California beach-rap bum Shwayze, Let It Beat, drops in at #55 (11,000). A number of anticipated releases appear to be hitting the skids, including the second album from Black Sabbath-loving Aussies Wolfmother, Cosmic Egg (#62, down 46 spots and 64 percent to 10,000); once-dominant radio titans Train, whose Save Me San Francisco slides more than 50 spots in week two to #70 on sales of 9,000; and R&B crooner Brian McKnight, whose Evolution of a Man nosedives 60-plus spots to #84 in its second week (down 69 percent to 8,000). Look for debuts next week from Bon Jovi and Britney Spears' greatest-hits album, as well as discs by Flyleaf, a live CD/DVD from the Killers and the latest from Dashboard Confessional.
