Lego Star Wars is a Lego theme which incorporates the Star Wars saga. The first Lego Star Wars, released in 1999 (13 years ago), included model 7140, the first Lego X-Wing. Star Wars was the first intellectual property to be licensed in Lego Group history. The first few sets based on the original trilogy were released in 1999 (13 years ago), coinciding with the release of The Phantom Menace. Sets based on the prequel trilogy (Episodes I to III) of Star Wars would follow, starting with Episode I. As each new movie in the prequel trilogy neared its release date, Lego issued new models of ships and scenes in those films, as well as additional sets from the original trilogy. Originally it was only licensed from 1999–2008, but the Lego Group recently extended the license with Lucasfilm Ltd. to 2011 (last year). However this is subject to change. The brand has spawned three major video game releases, developed by Traveller's Tales. Lego has produced models which coincided with The Clone Wars, which was released early in 2009 (3 years ago).
Three games based on the Lego Star Wars sets and the Star Wars movies have been released—Lego Star Wars: The Video Game (2005, 7 years ago), Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (2006, 6 years ago), and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007, 5 years ago).
In Aug. 2009 (3 years ago), to celebrate 10 years of LEGO Star Wars, Lego released the computer-animated comedy short movie Lego Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2, directed by Peder Pedersen.
