The Parthenon Gallery, in the "glass box" top level of the New Acropolis Museum is one of the most beautiful galleries we've ever seen.
It was designed specifically to protect and display the famous frieze of the Parthenon, carved by Phidias. The central core is exactly the same size as the Parthenon and the marbles will be displayed, at eye level, oriented in exactly the same direction as the Parthenon itself.
That orientation, matching the Parthenon on the Acropolis above, is the reason this gallery sits slightly askew the rest of the building. The glass walls of the gallery flood it with daylight and the view of Athens, in all directions is magnificent.
The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.
The museum was founded in 2003 (9 years ago) while the Organisation of the Museum was established in 2008 (4 years ago). It opened to the public on Jun. 21, 2009 (3 years ago). Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres. The Organisation for the Construction of the new museum is chaired by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Professor Emeritus of Archaeology, Dimitrios Pandermalis.
