Biography for Gerard Butler

Gerard James Butler (born 13 Nov. 1969 (43 years ago)) is a Scottish actor known for his portrayal of King Leonidas in 300, The Phantom in the 2004 (8 years ago) movie version of The Phantom of the Opera, Gerry Kennedy in P.S. I Love You, and One Two in RocknRolla.

Early life

Butler was born in Paisley, Scotland, the son of Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookie. Butler was raised in a working-class family. For the first two years of his life, he lived in Montreal, Quebec. When his parents divorced, his mother returned to Scotland with him and his siblings, Lynn and Brian. As well he has a half brother named Shaun from his father`s next marriage in Canada. Butler had no further contact with his father until he was 16 years old, which is when he met his half brother and step mother, Micheline, for the first time. When Butler was 22, his father died of cancer. Butler considers Paisley, Scotland as his hometown, due to his mother being born and raised there. Butler attended the Scottish Youth Theatre.

Personal life

Butler currently splits his time between Los Angeles and New York City. He has a pug named Lolita.

In 2009 (3 years ago) a supposed interview with Movieline.com created rumors that Butler had outed himself as bisexual. Movieline denied that any such interview had even taken place although these rumours have not been deemed as fallacious by Butler.

Butler was a heavy smoker but quit smoking in 2007 (5 years ago) when he played Gerry Kennedy in PS, I Love You. "I was smoking a huge amount and having real bad premonitions and then I got this role where the guy dies of cancer", Butler said. "The movie made me contemplate death and realise I was playing Russian roulette with my health. I've stopped smoking since".

Butler also prefers many people calling him Gerry. The main reason, as he told Jay Leno during an appearance on The Tonight Show, was because he disliked the way people, Americans especially, pronounced Gerard.

Butler said in an Esquire interview in 2009 (3 years ago) that he abstains from alcohol. Gerard Butler is rumored to be in a relationship with Jennifer Aniston (39 walls), which he also denied in the interview, saying that every time he is seen with a woman near him he is assumed to be with her. On Apr. 5 2009 (3 years ago) Butler did however confirm that he was dating Girls Aloud (29 walls) stunner Sarah Harding.

Career

Butler graduated from the School of Law at Glasgow University before embarking on his early career in stage plays. His first roles were in Coriolanus and in the stage version of Trainspotting. Butler landed his first movie role as Archie Brown in 1997's Mrs. Brown alongside Judi Dench and Billy Connolly. That same year, he appeared in a minor role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. He followed this with several appearances in various independent movies and several TV series in the UK, including a role in the series Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married and the movies The Cherry Orchard, One More Kiss, and Harrison's Flowers.

In 1999 (13 years ago), he began filming his first lead role as Attila the Hun in the American TV miniseries Attila. During filming of Attila, the production actually stopped in order for him to movie his second lead role as Dracula in Wes Craven’s Dracula 2000 (12 years ago). Both movies were released in 2000 (12 years ago). In this early part of his career his most notable work was in The Jury, a critically acclaimed UK TV miniseries. In Timeline which was released in 2003 (9 years ago), Butler once again starred alongside Billy Connolly. Based on the Michael Crichton book of the same name, Butler played archaeologist Andre Marek. Also in 2003 (9 years ago), he starred as Terry Sheridan opposite Angelina Jolie (147 walls) in Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The following year he was cast in the title role of Joel Schumacher's movie rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, co-starring Emmy Rossum (12 walls), Patrick Wilson, and Ciaran Hinds. Prior to filming The Phantom of the Opera, Butler had completed the independent movie Dear Frankie, which co-starred Emily Mortimer.

In 2005 (7 years ago), he starred in The Game of Their Lives, a movie based on a true story of the 1950 (62 years ago) U.S. soccer team who beat England 1 - 0 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The same year he was cast in as Beowulf (6 walls) in the Sturla Gunnarsson movie production of Beowulf (6 walls) & Grendel. Filmed entirely in Iceland, Beowulf (6 walls) & Grendel was widely released in Canada to moderate success. During filming, Butler also participated in and co-produced the documentary Wrath of Gods. Directed by Jon Gustafsson, the movie documents the dramatic circumstances the cast and crew faced while making the movie Beowulf (6 walls) & Grendel. Later this same year Butler began production of 300. The film, directed by Zack Snyder and co-starring Lena Headey, was released in Mar. 2007 (5 years ago). The movie was an adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name based on events surrounding the Battle of Thermopylae in Greece circa 480 BC. 300 was released in the US on 9 Mar. 2007 (5 years ago). It currently holds the record for the highest opening weekend box office gross in the month of Mar. at over $72 million during that first weekend. As of May 2007 (5 years ago), 300 had a box office gross of $438 million after nine weeks. Butler received various awards for this role including "Action Star of the Year" at the Taurus World Stunt Awards and "Biggest Ass Kicker" at the 2007 (5 years ago) Spike TV Guys' Choice Awards.

In 2006 (6 years ago), Butler completed filming Butterfly on a Wheel (renamed Shattered in the U.S.) and began work on PS, I Love You with Hilary Swank, based on Cecilia Ahern's novel and released in dec. 2007 (5 years ago).

Nim's Island (3 walls), which also stars Jodie Foster (6 walls) and Abigail Breslin, opened in cinemas on 4 Apr. 2008 (4 years ago). Butler was cast in the role of Nim's father, Jack, and as Nim's imaginary hero, Alex Rover. The dual role allowed Butler to use his natural Scottish burr when playing Alex, while he adopted an American accent as Jack.

He next appeared in RocknRolla, a gangster movie directed by Guy Ritchie, playing a street-smart gangster involved in a lucrative real-estate scheme. This movie had its North American premiere at the Toronto International movie Festival in sep. 2008 (4 years ago) and was released in major North American cities in Oct. 2008 (4 years ago).

Butler is also the voice of The Captain in the Watchmen (3 walls) movie extra, "Tales from the Black Freighter" that will complement Zack Snyder's adaptation of Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore's Watchmen. The special was released on both Blu-Ray and DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) on 24 Mar. 2009 (3 years ago).

Butler co-starred in the battle of the sexes comedy The Ugly Truth with Katherine Heigl. The movie had national sneak previews in Jul. 2009 (3 years ago) and was released on 24 July. The movie made $27.6 million in its opening weekend, and had the highest per-screen average in the top 10.
