I Love You, and One Two in RocknRolla.Early lifeButler was born in Paisley, Scotland, the son of Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookie. Butler was raised in a working-class family. For the first two years of his life, he lived in Montreal, Quebec. When his parents divorced, his mother returned to Scotland with him and his siblings, Lynn and Brian. As well he has a half brother named Shaun from his father`s next marriage in Canada. Butler had no further contact with his father until he was 16 years old, which is when he met his half brother and step mother, Micheline, for the first time. When Butler was 22, his father died of cancer. Butler considers Paisley, Scotland as his hometown, due to his mother being born and raised there. Butler attended the Scottish Youth Theatre.Personal lifeButler currently splits his time between Los Angeles and New York City. He has a pug named Lolita.In 2009 (3 years ago) a supposed interview with Movieline.com created rumors that Butler had outed himself as bisexual. Movieline denied that any such interview had even taken place although these rumours have not been deemed as fallacious by Butler. Butler was a heavy smoker but quit smoking in 2007 (5 years ago) when he played Gerry Kennedy in PS, I Love You. "I was smoking a huge amount and having real bad premonitions and then I got this role where the guy dies of cancer", Butler said. "The movie made me contemplate death and realise I was playing Russian roulette with my health. I've stopped smoking since". Butler also prefers many people calling him Gerry. The main reason, as he told Jay Leno during an appearance on The Tonight Show, was because he disliked the way people, Americans especially, pronounced Gerard. Butler said in an Esquire interview in 2009 (3 years ago) that he abstains from alcohol.
