News comes a week after rapper began his one-year jail sentence.By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne's <i>Rebirth</i> Photo: Universal Motown Lil Wayne's rock efforts have paid off: His Rebirth album has been certified gold, moving more than 500,000 copies, according to the Recording Industry of America. The announcement, courtesy of his label, comes one week and one day after the rapper turned himself to begin a one-year jail sentence for a 2007 gun charge in New York. On Rebirth, the New Orleans rapper eschewed turntables in favor of guitars as he produced a rock-concentrated project, which he called a "freedom album." "Yes, the album is still rock," he told Billboard in October. "I play guitar on 80 percent of the songs, and there's a lot of rock influences and rock beats. I also have Travis Barker on the album. But I don't want people to think I'm trying to do something I can't do. Don't think you're going to put on the album and hear me screaming and singing. ... Don't worry about that. [Laughs.] When people hear me say rock, they may get a little scared, like, 'Oh, God. What is he going to do?' When I said I was doing a rock album, it was about doing a freedom thing. This album isn't hip-hop. When I do my Carter albums, I know I've got to rap, I know I've got to spit. I know the words I've got to say and the subjects I've got to talk about. I also know the things I shouldn't say, the things I shouldn't talk about. There's none of those limits on this album. I say what I want, how I want. That's what this album is: a freedom album." The lyricist still raps plenty on the album, including on the Eminem-assisted "Drop the World." First of all, he plays the guitar — and while Kanye West, Drake and Lil Wayne have tried their hands at shredding, none of them can spin a wayward, folksy tune like he can. Combine that with co-signs from Eminem and T.I., who signed the Mixtape Daily Firestarter alum to his Grand Hustle roster, and you have the makings of a breakout star. So how, exactly, does Bobby Ray plan on introducing his soulful Southern lyricism? With his new single, "Nothin' On You," a sprightly, musical number from his forthcoming debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. "Introducing B.o.B or Bobby Ray — it takes more than one song to do it," the rapper told MTV News from red carpet of BET's "Rip the Runway." "But I feel like this song is really genuine and really sincere, so I feel good about people finding out about me through 'Nothin' On You'." The song, featuring Bruno Mars, currently rests at number 37 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B chart. Although "Nothin' On You" is still picking up steam, it's already received praise — the program director at Los Angeles' KIIS FM told Entertainment Weekly that B.o.B would be the next big thing on radio. Bruno who, along with Phillip Lawrence from production team the Smeezingtons, helmed the track, gushed over Bobby Ray's talent. "It's great — he's an incredible artist," the singer said. "We actually wrote and sung on the hook. We'd been fans of his for a minute and he came in and just murdered those verses. Hopefully the rest is gonna be history." The rapper has been signed to Atlantic Records for some time now and graced the pages of 2009's XXL Freshman 10 issue, with fellow rookies Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and Wale, among others. Waiting on the bench wasn't without its challenges. At one point B.o.B threatened to pull the plug on his promising career before it even started, though he later backtracked and said the rumors were exaggerated. "It does get frustrating, trying to be as free as possible but at the same time working with people," the rapper told MTV News last year. But with a new mixtape — the DJ Drama-hosted May 25th — in the streets and a release date on deck for his debut, April 27, Bobby Ray said he learned the value of patience. "I will tell you this about the journey as an artist to get to the point where you actually have a release date," he offered. "The biggest lesson I learned is patience. Once you get here it's like, OK, now you have to keep going. You never get to an end. So you have to be patient and pace yourself. Take time. It's like building a house. You gotta take time, build a foundation, get the walls right, get the electricity right, get ther plumbing right and make sure when you turn the light on that the door don't open up." Weezy was supposed to be sentenced on weapons charges Tuesday afternoon, but after a basement fire at the Manhattan Criminal Court building, his his court date was delayed. On Tuesday night, instead of spending time in his hotel room watching pay-per-view, Wayne made his way to Madison Square Garden, performing with Young Jeezy, Nicki Minaj and Drake during Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Tour. After the show, Weezy hit the studio before going out to party. New York Daily News reporters say they spotted him at the club 1Oak with his Young Money family and Trey Songz. On Wednesday night in Miami, Wayne was back in the studio until about 2:30 a.m. DJ Scoob Doo posted a TwitPic of Wayne, apparently in his Bugatti, driving by the studio. "@liltunechi & Bugatti Reunite 4 studio 2:30am," Scoob tweeted. Scoob, who has been traveling with Wayne and shooting footage for the latest installment of their DVD series "The Nino Brown Story," also posted a TwitPic of one of Wayne's Grammy Awards. "@liltunechi & @djscoobdoo nino brown 3 on way," Scoob wrote. "Carter 4 on repeat on Jet. I'll give it several of these." Video premieres March 11 on MTV.By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne in the "Drop the World" video Smashed TV sets, burning fires and pure chaos mark the proceedings for Lil Wayne's "Drop The World' music video featuring Eminem. An exclusive 30-second clip is available on MTV.com and the video is scheduled to premiere March 11 on MTV. Director Chris Robinson told MTV News recently that the visuals would be aggressive and feature a heavy amount of technology and in the preview, Robinson's warning is apparent. Wayne is standing at the crossroads of an abandoned block and as he raps the song's chorus — "I'm gonna pick the world up and drop it on your f------ head" — while an army of looters run back and forth, smashing items and making sure pandemonium ensues. Robinson described the shoot as "just energy" and raved about Eminem's entrance. "You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together, and the way that the song is constructed is great," he said. "Because unless you see it coming, you don't know Eminem is on the track. The first two hooks and the first two verses are all Wayne, and it's kind of a surprise when Eminem comes through, and we matched it visually how Eminem enters the piece. From the concept and to just hearing the lyrics, with both of these amazing lyricists killing it, the whole video is just energy." In the clip, a comet strikes the sky and seconds later Eminem appears among the debris. Wayne then joins Em as the two pose for cameras. "It hurts but I'll never show/ 'Cause pain you'll never know/ If only you could see how lonely and how cold/ And frostbit I've become," the Detroit MC kicks off the third verse, singing his flow. The collaboration is from Wayne's rock-leaning effort Rebirth. Wayne had long sought out Shady to join forces with him on a record. They were both part of the all-star "Forever," also featuring Kanye West and Drake, but fans clamored for just the two superstar lyricists to appear on a song together. However, it wasn't until recently that Eminem was available, after working on his comeback album and battling his drug addiction. "There hasn't really necessarily been a time for me to go to collaborate and sh-- lately, because I been so locked down in the studio," Eminem said. "But I'm open for whatever. One of the most anticipated videos Weezy has on deck is Rebirth's "Drop the World," featuring Eminem. A preview of the Chris Robinson-directed clip has appeared online. The video is scheduled to premiere March 11 on MTV. In the clip, the superstar rappers can be seen together during Em's portion; Wayne serves as the hypeman to Slim Shady as they both mug for the cameras while standing in front of a green screen. Robinson spoke to MTV News about the video, which he promised would be aggressive and use new technology. In another scene, Wayne is seen performing in front of a riot occurring behind him. The broken glass, fire and commotion fit with the track, a raucous collaboration that finally sees Wayne and Em collaborating on a song that features just the two of them (they previously collaborated on Drake's "Forever"). Robinson, who's worked with Wayne in the past, said Eminem brought a comic relief to the set, which was filmed in one day on the eve of the 2010 Grammy Awards. "He was a down-to-earth dude, very funny," Robinson told MTV News. "He was cracking jokes all the time. Sometimes on a set it can get grueling, but I found Em's whole crew to be cool." It was the first time Robinson had worked with the Detroit rap star. Robinson had a long list of credits, including most of T.I.'s standout videos. The director also has a movie credit under his belt, again working with Tip, for his debut "ATL." But the veteran director said working with Eminem was its own unique experience, noting that it made him feel like a fan again. "It was the first time I ever met Em and I felt like I was 18 again," Robinson explained. "I was like, 'I'm here with Lil Wayne and Eminem!' "When I was in the studio, I played him a couple of joints, and then he just said, 'Damn, he's really starting to go hard,' " Soulja Boy told MTV News on the red carpet of BET's "Rip the Runway." 'When Travis hollered, I was definitely flattered,' Kanye West's DJ says of getting the drummer's call.By James Montgomery Travis Barker and A-Trak Photo: MTV News It's been nearly a year since Travis Barker performed with a DJ, but now, he's getting ready to hit the road again, this time with Kanye West's main man behind the decks. Barker will be teaming up with turntablist A-Trak — West's touring DJ — for a run of shows, scheduled to kick off March 9-10 at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre. The gigs will mark the first time he's performed live with a DJ since the death of his partner DJ AM in August. But, as Barker told MTV News earlier this month, he had always considered working with Trak on a project of some sort. And after the two jammed a bit last year, both men knew they had to take their show to the stage. "I had met A-Trak last year at Coachella, but I had seen a set of his at Avalon in Los Angeles maybe four years ago, with AM," Barker told MTV News. "He was a guy who I always wanted to work with in some way. So I gave him a call." "When Travis hollered, I was definitely flattered. We started by jamming once, back in the fall, just came over to the studio, and we did, like, one hour of jamming, which we thought was maybe a half an hour," A-Trak added. "I just started playing records and scratching, and he was playing on top, and it went really, really naturally. It was very fluid. And we stopped and looked at the watch, and it was like, 'Oh, we've been playing for an hour and didn't even realize it.' And I think that solidified for both of us in our minds that we could do this pretty easily." The duo will perform versions of each other's remixes (they've reworked tracks for everyone from Eminem and Soulja Boy Tell'em to MSTRKRFT and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), plus new material they've been working on in Barker's Los Angeles studio. Or, at least, that's the plan right now. "It's going to be a mix of everything," A-Trak said. "We're still kind of rehearsing it, but I think it's going to be some songs people recognize, some of the remixes Travis has done, some of my remixes. Just kind of mix it up." Barker said the duo plan to start small, with the pair of shows at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre, before taking the show wide. Additional shows will follow later in March in Las Vegas, Austin's South by Southwest and Miami. "Our first shows are at the Roxy, and then South by Southwest will probably be a little bit bigger," Barker said. "The Winter Music Conference in Miami will probably be a little bit bigger. But the first ones will be really intimate." "We might do a run of side shows in health clubs and saunas," A-Trak laughed. "Just set up in the steam bath and play. It was an idea we had yesterday." As if fans needed any more proof, the shape-shifting songstress swept the Brit Awards on Tuesday (February 16), taking charge of the U.K.'s high-profile music ceremony while winning three key categories — and paying touching tribute to fashion icon Alexander McQueen. Considered by many to be the British equivalent of the Grammys, more than 1,000 industry insiders vote for the Brit Awards. In addition to Gaga, the evening's big winners included Jay-Z, Lily Allen and Oasis — who received a special honor as their (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was named best British album of the last 30 years. The big story of the evening, however, was Gaga. Nominated three times, the "Poker Face" singer swept her three categories, taking home Best International Album, Best International Female Solo Artist and International Breakthrough Act Supported by MTV Viewers. Gaga Steals The Brit Awards Show As expected, Lady Gaga stole the show with a daring outfit, performing in a Marge Simpson-height white wig and lace veil, accented by lace eyebrows. Less predictable, however, was her heartfelt words for one of the men who helped her become such an outrageous style icon. "Thank you to Lee McQueen," Gaga said with a strained voice at one point, referring to the fashion designer whose lobster-clawed shoes adorned her feet in the "Bad Romance" music video. McQueen was found dead in his London home last Thursday. Of particular interest to American audiences might be the International Male Solo Artist category, which had Jay-Z triumphing over fellow heavyweights Eminem and Bruce Springsteen. The Brits also handed out special awards honoring the past 30 years, celebrating best album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, and best hit song, the Spice Girls' "Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are." Blige, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem. But one collaborator still eludes him. Drake named British singer Sade as one of the artists he hoped to work with on his forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later. "Sade not only embodies a lot of class, her brand is so strong and she's such an amazing woman, but the melody she chooses to use and her voice has that dark, sexy feel that a lot of So Far Gone has," Drake told MTV News last month. " 'Lust for Life,' the 'Houstatlantavegas,' 'The Calm' — those all remind me of 'Sade moments.' I'll call them 'Sade moments,' where you hear it, it hits you, and you feel something. When Sade's 'King of Sorrow' comes on, you feel it, consistently. So I just want to try to experiment and see if there's a way to bring her into the hip-hop world. I'm kinda scared. I don't want it to be that moment that everybody's like, 'Whoa, that shouldn't have happened.' So it's really got to be calculated for the right moment. ... Hopefully there will be a great Drake and Sade record for people to listen to, and hopefully it'll be one of the best decisions I've ever made." Sade, however, who recently released her 10th album, Soldier of Love, after a decade-long haitus, isn't planning to take Drake up on his offer anytime soon. "I don't think they have contacted me," Sade, 51, told Canada's National Post. "I've never collaborated because I've always avoided working outside my safety zone — I can be exactly who I am and can fail or succeed within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn't want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver, because I think I wouldn't deliver." Drake's Thank Me Later is now tentatively slated for a March release with appearances in the works from Andre 3000, Eminem and Jay-Z, among others. The Young Money MC will also headline 25 cities on his Away From Home Tour, beginning April 6, where he will be implementing an eco-friendly policy throughout the run. Come June, the 50 Cent-captained team is scheduled to do something they haven't done in quite some time: tour the United States. Although no dates or other acts have been announced for the bill, Tony Yayo is hoping at least Slim Shady will be on the road with them. "I'm not sure if Eminem is gonna be a part of the bill," Yayo said recently in New York. "I know 50 wants to go out and do the U.S. tour. It would be an honor if Em came out. Shout to Em, the whole D12, everybody out there. "My best experience was [the] Anger Management [3 tour] with 50 and Eminem," Yayo added. "They was killing each other on the tour, it was crazy. That was an ill tour. Em comes out, Fif comes out, D12, Proof was still alive — rest in peace to Proof. That's one of the best hype men ever." While Yayo was fantasizing out loud, he threw another name in the mix. "You know what? I would love to see Eminem, Dre and 50 do a big tour, so I could make millions of dollars," he said. "I'll be a stagehand and work in the back. I wouldn't even care. I know I'll make a million dollars lifting stuff. It's an honor to be in their presence." Obviously, it would be a huge undertaking to get all these guys on the road together, but Yayo and the fans can dream, can't they? "With guys like Em and Dre and Fif, these guys got busy schedules," the Queens native said. "Em is working on another album. Fif got about 15 movies; he's working on another movie right now called 'The Gun.' Dre — come on, man, you see them Dr. Dre headphones selling like hot cakes everywhere you go. Those guys are busy guys. I feel blessed I could say that I know Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. A lot of artists beg to do a song with Eminem, beg to do a song with 50 Cent, beg to do a song with Dre — I've experienced all those worlds." Yayo said that his new album might be called Godfather of the Ghetto, and like Lloyd Banks' next album, he wants to put it out this summer while the Unit are on tour. As for when 50 might release another LP, Tony said Fif isn't focused on that right now. "50 is like a chameleon," Yayo said. "What I seen from Fif, he's in Will Smith mode; he's shooting movie after movie. I know he's definitely supporting me and Banks' albums." This year, the pop-culture madness is all going to take place in one city. That's because both the 2010 Movie Awards and the 2010 VMAs will air live from Los Angeles. First on Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, MTV will launch the 19th annual Movie Awards live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, the same venue where "Twilight" dominated the evening in 2009. Then on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, we'll launch the 27th annual VMAs in Los Angeles, with the show returning to the West Coast after a stint in the Big Apple. According to reports by a host of Web sites, including Rolling Stone's, Lady Gaga was one of the many artists (also including Beyonce, Eminem, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z) who were reported to be a part of the historic re-recording to aid Haiti - reports that later proved to be premature. And on Thursday, Lady Gaga explained to Billy Bush for Access Hollywood and "The Billy Bush Show," why she wasn't in the LA studio laying down a track earlier this week.

"I bought this Taylor Swift T-shirt the other day that I might wear tonight." While Drake didn't end up wearing any Swift merch onstage for his performance of "Forever," alongside Eminem, Lil Wayne and Travis Barker, he is willing to show his fandom in other ways. "I just have this small little thing with her; I just like her whole being. I'm excited about her career," he said, adding he'd like to get into the studio with her. "That would be nice, I'm down!" Swift has already dabbled in hip-hop. Who could forget T-Swizzle's memorable "Thug Life" duet with T-Pain at the CMT Awards last year? And long before she and Kanye West had a more, er, complicated relationship, Swift shared with MTV News that she wouldn't mind hitting the studio with him.
