Kathryn Bailey "Kate" Beckinsale (born 26 Jul. 1973 (37 years ago)) is an English actress. Her best known movies include Pearl Harbor (2001, 9 years ago), Underworld (2003, 7 years ago), Van Helsing (2004, 6 years ago), Underworld: Evolution (2006, 4 years ago) and Click (2006, 4 years ago).

Early years

Born in Finsbury Park, London, Beckinsale is the daughter of actor Richard Beckinsale, who died from a heart attack in 1979 (31 years ago), and actress Judy Loe. She has a paternal half-sister, Samantha, who is also an actress. Beckinsale's paternal great-grandfather was Burmese, and Beckinsale has said that she was "very oriental-looking" as a child.

Beckinsale attended the GoDolphin (9 walls) and Latymer School, an all-girls independent school in London. In her teens, Beckinsale twice won the W. H. Smith Young Writers' competition — once for three short stories and once for three poems. After a rebellious adolescence, including a period of anorexia and starting a smoking habit, she followed in the footsteps of her parents and began her acting career. Her first role was in One Against the Wind, a television movie about World War II that was first aired in 1991 (19 years ago). Having gained three language A levels, Beckinsale studied French and Russian literature at New College, Oxford University, though she did not finish her degree. She thought that having an academic background studying foreign language and literature would broaden her range of acting roles.

Career

During her first year at Oxford, Beckinsale was offered a part in Kenneth Branagh's big-screen film, Much Ado About Nothing, adapted from the Shakespeare play. She spent her last year of studies in Paris, after which she decided to leave the university and concentrate on her acting career. In 1994 (16 years ago), Beckinsale had a supporting role in Prince of Jutland, working alongside Christian Bale, with whom she would later reunite in the 2002 (8 years ago) drama Laurel Canyon. Kate starred in Haunted (1995, 15 years ago) with Aidan Quinn and John Gielgud in which she appeared topless and in the 1996 (14 years ago) TV movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. She subsequently appeared in a few low-profile films, including Shooting Fish and The Last Days of Disco, both in 1998 (12 years ago). During this time, Beckinsale also appeared in television movies and in stage roles, including the well-received Cold Comfort Farm, opposite British movie and television notables Ian McKellen, Rufus Sewell, Eileen Atkins, Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry.

Beckinsale's first major American film, Brokedown Palace (1999, 11 years ago), was not a commercial success. Soon after, Beckinsale was cast in the 2001 (9 years ago) movie Pearl Harbor as the female lead, after Charlize Theron (73 walls) turned down the part. The movie was one of the highest-grossing movies of its year. In the years following, she appeared in a series of American movies that, while high-profile, were given a somewhat mixed reviews, including Serendipity (2001, 9 years ago), Underworld (2003, 7 years ago) and Van Helsing (2004, 6 years ago). In 2005 (5 years ago), she portrayed Ava Gardner in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, a role for which she gained 20 pounds.

In 2006 (4 years ago), Beckinsale was placed at #23 in FHM's "100 Sexiest Women in the World", after being #71 in 2005 (5 years ago). She has also been placed at #16 in Maxim's "HOT 100" (2003, 7 years ago), #63 in Stuff's "100 Sexiest Women in the World" (2002, 8 years ago), and was chosen by the English magazine Hello! as "England’s #1 Beauty", also in 2002 (8 years ago).

In Jan. 2006 (4 years ago), Beckinsale reprised her role as a vampire in the movie Underworld: Evolution, a sequel to her 2003 (7 years ago) film, Underworld, again directed by her husband, Len Wiseman. The movie opened in the #1 spot at the box office, grossing over $26 million in its first weekend of release. On 24 Jan. 2006 (4 years ago), Beckinsale was featured on the MTV series, Punk'd. The set-up for the segment took place at the Avalon Hotel in Los Angeles.

Also in 2006 (4 years ago), Beckinsale appeared in the comedy Click, starring Adam Sandler, which opened on 23 June. Next, Beckinsale replaced Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie Vacancy, released in 2007 (3 years ago). Her next role was in Snow Angels, which was released in 2008 (2 years ago).

At Comic-Con 2007 (3 years ago), Beckinsale expressed interest in playing Catwoman in the current Christopher Nolan-directed Batman films. In Apr. 2007 (3 years ago), during an interview promoting Vacancy, Beckinsale claimed no knowledge of the rumors linking her to a remake of Barbarella. "I was told on the set yesterday, someone said, 'Oh I hear you're doing Barbarella,' one of the grips. So that's the most official it's become. Every woman would consider Barbarella for a moment, but I don't know." Beckinsale eventually won a libel lawsuit against the Daily Express concerning the matter.

Beckinsale is signed to Independent Models in London.

As of 2009 (last year), Beckinsale's movies have grossed a total of $791,492,436 domestically.

Personal life

Beckinsale and her ex-partner Michael Sheen have a daughter, Lily Mo Sheen (born 31 Jan. 1999 (11 years ago)). She reported in interviews that during her pregnancy with Lily was the only time she has ever stopped smoking. During the Underworld shoot, Beckinsale split from Sheen, who was also starring in the film. She became involved with the director of the film, Len Wiseman. In Jun. 2003 (7 years ago), Beckinsale became engaged to Wiseman, and the two were married on 9 May 2004 (6 years ago) in Bel-Air, California.

The cast of Everybody's Fine hit the red carpet in NYC last night for a special East Coast screening after one last month in LA. Drew Barrymore went with a bright sequined number, while Kate Beckinsale posed for photos with her decked out daughter Lily Sheen. Robert De Niro brought along his wife Grace, while the other male star of the film, Sam Rockwell, smiled alongside their director Kirk Jones. Peter Facinelli, fresh from his recent SIRIUS interview, turned out to chat about his family Christmas plans. Justin Long turned up to support Drew at the afterparty, though it looks like he spent lots of his time chuckling with Sam. The movie itself looks like it will contain a few laughs, judging by an early preview, as one of the many can't-miss movies hitting the big screen this month.
