Biography for Avril Lavigne

Avril Ramona Lavigne Whibley (born Sep. 27, 1984 (26 years ago)), better known by her birth name Avril Lavigne, is a Canadian singer-songwriter, fashion designer, and actress. Lavigne has sold more than 30 million copies of her albums worldwide. She is currently one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the United States, with over 10.25 million copies certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. She has been dubbed as the 'pop-punk princess' by various sources.

Lavigne broke into the recording industry with her debut album, Let Go, released in 2002 (8 years ago). As of 2009 (last year), over 16 million copies were sold worldwide, more than 6 million of which were sold in the United States. Her second and third album, Under My Skin and The Best Damn Thing, reached number one on the Global charts. Lavigne has scored five number-one singles worldwide, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm With You", "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend".

Early years

Avril Ramona Lavigne was born to a French-born father, John, and a Franco-Ontarian mother, Judy, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada on Sep. 27, 1984 (26 years ago). Her father named her Avril after the month "April" in French. She has an older brother, Matthew, and a younger sister, Michelle. Lavigne's mother was the first to spot young Lavigne's talent. At the age of two, Lavigne began singing church songs along with her mother. The family moved to Napanee, Ontario, when Lavigne was five years old.

In 1998 (12 years ago), Lavigne won a competition to sing with fellow Canadian singer Shania Twain (4 walls) on her first major concert tour. She appeared alongside Twain at her concert in Ottawa, appearing on stage to sing "What Made You Say That". She was discovered by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri, while singing country covers at a Chapters bookstore in Kingston, Ontario. During a performance with the Lennox Community Theatre, Lavigne was spotted by local folk singer Steve Medd, who invited her to contribute vocals on his song, "Touch the Sky", for his 1999 (11 years ago) album, Quinte Spirit. She also sang on "Temple of Life" and "Two Rivers" for his follow up 2000 (10 years ago) album, My Window to You.

Film career

Lavigne made a cameo in the movie Going the Distance and also appeared in an episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, performing "Sk8er Boi" with her band. Lavigne made her movie debut in the 2006 (4 years ago) animated movie Over the Hedge, which is based on the comic strip of same name. She voices the character Heather, a Virginia Opossum. In Aug. 2006 (4 years ago), Canadian Business magazine ranked her the seventh top Canadian actor dominating in Hollywood in their second-annual ranking Celebrity Power List. She is ranked second with the most web hits, and sixth in TV mentions.

Lavigne acted in the Richard Gere movie The Flock, as the girlfriend of a crime suspect. Lavigne appears in the movie Fast Food Nation, which is based on her favorite book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.

The British publication The London Paper reported that she recently landed a lead role in an upcoming film. Lavigne revealed, "I've got a movie role coming up — something you wouldn't expect from me, something deep and dark."

Personal life

In the Jan. 2003 (7 years ago) issue of Seventeen magazine, she admitted to "snagging a bite of Matt's cheeseburgers every now and again." She said also she prefers not to eat meat, but will not say she's a vegetarian "in case anyone caught her eating meat".

Lavigne has a star tattooed on the inside of her left wrist that matches the style of the one used for her first album artwork. It was created at the same time as friend and musical associate Ben Moody's identical tattoo. In late 2004 (6 years ago), she had a small pink heart-shaped tattoo featuring the letter 'D' applied to her right wrist, which represents her now husband Deryck Whibley, a fellow Canadian singer who is the lead singer/guitarist of punk band Sum 41. They began dating in Feb. 2004 (6 years ago) and on Jun. 27, 2005 (5 years ago), Lavigne and Whibley became engaged. Whibley proposed to Lavigne by surprising her with a trip to Venice, a gondola ride, and then a romantic picnic.

The couple married in a Catholic ceremony attended by about 110 guests on Jul. 15, 2006 (4 years ago) at a private estate in Montecito, California. When asked if they were ready for kids the couple said "not right now but somewhere down the road."

Lavigne said in a 2004 (6 years ago) interview that her favorite party song was Hey Ya, by Outkast. She likes listening to Third Eye Blind, Oasis, Marilyn Manson, System Of A Down (3 walls) and Blink-182, and loves especially the track I Miss You. Asked what she would put on a mix tape to a boy she liked, she answered: "Iris, by Goo Goo Dolls. I'd put a few Coldplay and Oasis songs. Radiohead - The Bends is one of my favorite albums".

After a rocky start to the semifinals, we take a look back at this stage of the competition last year.By Eric Ditzian Anoop Desai performs on season eight of "American Idol" Photo: Michael Becker/Getty Images/ Fox After two nights of middling top 24 "American Idol" performances — from Tim Urban's bleated butchering of OneRepublic to Lacey Brown's drearily clichéd "Landslide" — a consensus seems to be forming that this year's talent pales in comparison to that of last season. But are the season-nine crooners really that much worse at this stage in the competition than contestants that came before them? We took a look back at the first live shows of season eight — when the show featured a top 36 rather than a top 24 — to reacquaint ourselves with past performances and provide a little context as the new season pushes forward. In February 2009, we hammered Anoop Desai for croaking his way through Monica's "Angel of Mine," and he was actually sent packing — until the judges rescued him with one of their wild cards. 'Noop Dog went on to show off some admirable R&B skills and finished sixth in the competition. That first live show didn't represent who he truly was as a singer. Conversely, Alexis Grace delivered a soaring take on Aretha Franklin's "Never Loved a Man," earning comparisons to Kelly Clarkson and making us think she was a serious contender; she didn't even make the top 10. The point is, the first live show is not the most accurate indicator of performances to come. That being said, there's no denying this week's "Idol" offered up some wicked stinkers and very few breath-takers. When he wasn't being ogled by Kara DioGuardi, Casey James sauntered through a fine acoustic version of Bryan Adams' "Heaven" and Lilly Scott surprised us with a reworked take on the Beatles' "Fixing a Hole." Yet with the possible exception of Andrew Garcia (who made an odd song choice with Fall Out Boy's "Sugar We're Going Down" but is nonetheless a front-runner), this season has given us nothing like the breakout talents from season eight. Back in '09, Danny Gokey blew the audience away with Mariah Carey's "Hero." Allison Iraheta immediately called to mind a gruffer, more authentic and more talented incarnation of Avril Lavigne. And after Adam Lambert's glammed-up take on the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," it became clear he was unlike anyone the show had ever seen. All these top 36 contestants went on to sign major-label deals. And this season? We've got some hopefuls, but no one who wowed us. Does that mean we won't be wowed at all this season? 'I just really enjoyed the haunting quality of the song and just wanted to capture that in video form,' Dave Meyers said of 'Alice in Wonderland' track.By Jocelyn Vena Avril Lavigne in "Alice" Photo: Disney Avril Lavigne seems to have left her pink rock roots behind for her "Alice" video, instead exploring a more haunting and gothic world through the rabbit hole. And the video's director, Dave Meyers, says that video beautifully complements Lavigne's contribution to the "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack. The video shot for two days at the end of January in Los Angeles' Arboretum. And the singer and director didn't allow local rainstorms stop them from weaving together the dreamy concept. "[Avril and I] kind of discussed a version of what we ended up shooting," he said about the video's concept. "She saw herself running during the choruses. She saw herself at a piano. She was proud of her musical contribution to the song. And I sort of played with the texture. I built the hole and told her it would be cool to have her at the bottom of the hole. It was two artists vibing." And while "Alice in Wonderland" director Tim Burton wasn't involved with the video concept-wise, Meyers took the song's ethereal feel and embraced it for the video's vibe. "I thought it was like, honestly, Tim Burton in music form. I didn't expect it from Avril. I just really enjoyed the haunting quality of the song and just wanted to capture that in video form. In a lot of ways, what I wanted to do was a perfume ad in a goth way with enough of a story so that it's not a bunch of randomness. And it made this surreal look that was fashiony but goth." The duo weren't able to see the movie prior to shooting, so they had to use their imaginations for the video's concept. They decided to create an "Avril" in Wonderland that included "a couple nods to the film." Meyers added, "So there were certain touch points in general. We kind of wanted to make a haunting piece that represented goth and Alice. ... It's a fun world. "Tim Burton keeps it pretty secretive. I just saw the film yesterday though. I got to see it after the [video was made]. That was my reward for a job well done. ... Everybody was just excited [about the project], starting with Tim Burton. He loved the song and ended up loving the video. [And] I did enjoy [the film]. I thought it was wonderfully visual. It was very fashionable. It was funny. I'm a huge Tim Burton fan, so I was satisfied. It's a more interesting take than the actual book. It also happens to be the plot for Avril Lavigne's new music video, "Alice," off the "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack, which premiered on Vevo. The video opens with Lavigne decked out in modern-day pop-punk street clothes. She sees a rabbit and follows him into a world that features Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, a piano and lots and lots of mushrooms. In this world, it seems, she must wear an old-timey dress. Scenes from the film are edited with newly shot scenes of Lavigne. The Canadian pop star stares and runs around aimlessly as she sings, "When the world's crashing down/ When I fall and hit the ground/ I will turn myself around/ Don't you try to stop me." In one scene, she sits down at the Mad Hatter's tea party before running off to try to find her way back home. Eventually all works out for Lavigne. She's back in the real world with her memories of Wonderland safely intact as she fondly looks back. Lavigne recently blogged about the video's premiere, writing, "I had so much fun doing this video. We shot it in the Los Angeles Arboretum. ... It was beautiful. We wanted the visuals to capture the spirit of the movie." Although the video gives fans a taste of what they can expect from the Tim Burton-directed flick, Lavigne says that writing the song for the film has amped up her desire to see the finished product. "I feel very lucky to be a part of Tim Burton's new film 'Alice in Wonderland,' " she blogged about the project. "Working on this project was such a treat! It was such a great experience and Tim Burton was an absolute pleasure. He is very smart. I am so grateful for this opportunity ... and can't wait to see the whole film!!!!"
