Biography for Aaliyah Dana Haughton

Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 (31 years ago) – Aug. 25, 2001 (9 years ago)), who performed under the mononym Aaliyah, was an American recording artist, actress and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. At an early age, she appeared on Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At age 12, Aaliyah was signed to Jive Records and Blackground Records by her uncle, Barry Hankerson. He introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album. Age Ain't Nothing But a Number sold two million copies in the United States and was certified double Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). After facing allegations of an illegal marriage with Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed to Atlantic Records.

Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million, which sold two million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide. In 2000 (10 years ago), Aaliyah appeared in her first major film, Romeo Must Die. She also contributed to the film's soundtrack, where "Try Again" was released as a single. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on radio airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this feat. "Try Again" earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocalist.

After filming Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her part in Queen of the Damned. She released her third and final album, Aaliyah, in 2001 (9 years ago). On Aug. 25, 2001 (9 years ago), Aaliyah and eight others were killed in an airplane crash in The Bahamas after filming the music video for the single "Rock the Boat". The pilot, Luis Morales III, was unlicensed at the time of the accident and had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Aaliyah's family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court. Since then, Aaliyah has achieved commercial success with several posthumous releases. Selling over 24 million records worldwide, she has been credited for helping redefine R&B and hip hop and has been named the "Queen of Urban Pop".

Musical style and image

Aaliyah had a vocal range of a soprano. With the release of her debut single "Back & Forth", Dimitri Ehrlich of Entertainment Weekly expressed that Aaliyah's "silky vocals are more agile than those of self-proclaimed queen of hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige." Aaliyah described her sound as "street but sweet", which featured her "gentle" vocals over a "hard" beat. Though Aaliyah did not write any of her own material, her lyrics were described to be in-depth. She incorporated R&B, pop and hip hop into her music. Her songs were often uptempo and melancholy, revolving around matters of the heart. Her songs have been said to have "crisp production" and "staccato arrangements" that "extend genre boundaries" while containing "old-school" soul music. When experimenting with other genres, such as Latin pop and heavy metal, writers panned the attempt.

As her albums progressed, writers felt that Aaliyah matured, calling her progress a "declaration of strength and independence". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic described her eponymous album, Aaliyah, as "a statement of maturity and a stunning artistic leap forward" and called it one of the strongest urban soul records of its time. She portrayed "unfamiliar sounds, styles and emotions", but managed to please critics with the contemporary sound it contained. Ernest Hardy of Rolling Stone felt that Aaliyah reflected a stronger technique, where she gave her best vocal performance. Others felt that she was "satisfying rather than extraordinary", stating that she added little to modern R&B.

As an artist, Aaliyah often voiced that she was inspired by a number of performers. These include Michael Jackson (25 walls), Stevie Wonder, Sade, En Vogue, Nine Inch Nails, 'N Sync, Korn (4 walls), Britney Spears (80 walls), The Notorious B.I.G., Prince, Naughty by Nature, Johnny Mathis and Janet Jackson. Aaliyah expressed that Michael Jackson's Thriller was her "favorite album" and that "[n]othing will ever top Thriller." She stated that she admired Sade because "she stays true to her style no matter what... she's an amazing artist, an amazing performer... and I absolutely love her." Aaliyah expressed Janet Jackson—whom she had drawn frequent comparison to over the course of her career—was someone she had always desired to work with, stating "I admire her a great deal. She's a total performer... I'd love to do a duet with Janet Jackson." Jackson reciprocated Aaliyah's affections, commenting "I've loved her from the beginning because she always comes out and does something different, musically." Jackson also stated she would have enjoyed collaborating with Aaliyah.

Since the beginning of her career, Aaliyah focused on her public image. She often wore baggy clothes and sunglasses, stating that she "wanted to be me". She described her image (wallpaper) as being "important… to differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack". She often wore black clothing, which led women in the United States and Japan to utilize her look. Aaliyah participated in fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger's All America Tour and was featured in Tommy Jean ads, which depicted her in boxer shorts, baggy jeans and a tube top. Hilfiger's brother, Andy, called it "a whole new look" that was "classy but sexy". When she changed her hairstyle, Aaliyah took her mother's advice to cover her left eye, much like Veronica Lake. In 1998 (12 years ago), Aaliyah hired a personal trainer to keep in shape. She exercised five days a week and ate diet foods. Aaliyah was praised for her "clean-cut image" and "moral values".

Legacy

Aaliyah has been credited for helping redefine R&B and hip hop in the 1990s, "leaving an indelible imprint on the music industry as a whole." Steve Huey of Allmusic wrote Aaliyah ranks among the "elite" artists of the R&B genre, as she "played a major role in popularizing the stuttering, futuristic production style that consumed hip-hop and urban soul in the late '90s." Described as one of "R&B's most important artists" during the 1990s, her second studio album, One in a Million, became one of the most influential R&B albums of the decade. According to Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine, Aaliyah provided a "missing link between hip-hop and electronica". Having sold 8.1 million albums in the United States and over 24 million records worldwide, Aaliyah has been named the "Queen of Urban Pop" and "proved she was a muse in her own right". Ernest Hardy of Rolling Stone dubbed her as the "undisputed queen of the midtempo come-on".

Aaliyah was honored at the 2001 (9 years ago) MTV Video Music Awards by Janet Jackson, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Ginuwine and her brother, Rashad, who all paid tribute to her. In the same year, the United States Social Security Administration ranked the name Aaliyah one of the 100 most popular names for newborn girls. Aaliyah was ranked as one of "The Top 40 Women of the Video Era" and "100 Sexiest Artists" in VH1's 2003 (7 years ago) The Greatest series. She was also ranked at number 18 on BET's "Top 25 Dancers of All Time". In memory of Aaliyah, the Entertainment Industry Foundation created the Aaliyah Memorial Fund to donate money raised to charities she supported.

The Notorious B.I.G.'s MTV Interviews: A Look Back MTV News - 10 days ago
Thirteen years after B.I.G.'s death, we look back on his life as hip-hop's brightest star. Notorious B.I.G. Photo: MTV News Tuesday (March 9) is a day not to mourn, but to celebrate the life and legacy of one of music's most gifted artists: the Notorious B.I.G. His voice, his flow, his rhymes, his swag — whatever you wanted, B.I.G. had it to offer. He could tell stories, battle it out, ignite the party or kick game to the ladies. Christopher Wallace was made for rap. We didn't get much time with Biggie. He put out his first album in 1994, and he died in early 1997 before the release of his second LP (Life After Death). Due to his work ethic, however, we have a catalog of timeless music that is often imitated, never duplicated. As mesmerizing as a Biggie song was, part of his allure as an artist was his charming personality. He's a rare breed that could capture the wit and magnetism in his offstage persona and bring it to his music. Here, we are taking you back into our vaults to relive Biggie's best MTV interviews. He was candid and thoughtful as he spoke about the inspiration for his music, his stage performance and much more. On Tuesday night, Diddy is going to celebrate the life of his friend and marquee artist at Brooklyn club the Lab. "We're trying to make March 9th a national hip-hop holiday," Diddy told MTV News last week. "It already is, on the low. MTV is going to have a big special. We're doing a party. I'm going to Brooklyn. It's gonna be the first time I'm throwing a party in Brooklyn. I'm from Harlem. Everybody in Harlem knows you don't usually go over the bridge to Brooklyn. It's a big, big deal. Me being such a Harlemite, I'm going over there to pay respect to my man. It's gonna be a big party in Brooklyn with Mister Cee. It's a big day. It's a day to celebrate his life. It's a day to celebrate the life of the man. We done did the movie, the records. It's something that, I guess, as a label we're obsessed with: making sure people don't forget about this man in a positive way. March 9 is Biggie Day. ... Bump Biggie all day, feel good and positive." On Tuesday, MTV Jams will be playing videos by B.I.G. and a slew of other fallen musical soldiers, such as Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, Big Pun, the Lost Boyz and their deceased member Freaky Tah and Camoflauge. This week's "Sucker Free Sunday" on MTV2 is running a special tribute to Biggie, hosted by Diddy. Related Videos Notorious B.I.G.: In Memoriam Related Photos Remembering The Notorious B.I.G. You do have to be extra fly, though. "You could wear any of your sides of Biggie," he welcomed. "He had his 'Machine Gun Funk' attire. He had his 'Big Poppa' attire. Come as you are. Come with some positive energy. Get ready to shout his lyrics. We gonna have a special show we putting together for him. It's gonna be off the chain." Drake Takes Over On 'Say Something,' With Timbaland's Blessing MTV News - 57 days ago
'His albums are about showcasing artists,' Drizzy tells MTV News about Shock Value II.By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News One of the premier cuts from Timbaland's Shock Value II is the Drake-featuring "Say Something." The track sounds more like Drake with Timbaland than the other way around, and Drizzy's takeover has the super-producer's full blessing. "I feel that's the hottest record Drake got," Tim said. "That's the hottest hook I heard him on since the 'Best I Ever Had.' That's his lane. That's how I feel. He's the only one that could get away with that slow-feel music that makes you feel like it was fast. It seems like Drake, all day. Ah, man. When Drake wrote to it, he had to call me and say, 'I wanna make sure you like this hook. Because the way I'm rapping to it, I feel like it was my record. I had to realize this was not my record; this is a feature you want me to be on.' I had to catch a grip and say, 'Get it right. This is your record.' " Tim didn't mind Drake being dominant on the track, singing the hook and laying a verse. "He got it right," Timbaland said. "He was like, 'Listen, I know it's gonna sound like your song, but that's what I want it to sound like,' " Drake told us about the collaboration. " 'I want it to be a Drake record. Then I'll just do my thing on it.' That's what his albums are about. His albums are about showcasing artists. In doing that, he showcases his own talent in production. But it's really about the artists. He wants to create a Drake moment. A Rihanna moment, a Kings of Leon moment, a Nelly Furtado moment. "So he sent me the beat. I loved the beat," the 23-year-old added. "It had that spark to it. That emotion. It moved. I came up with that concept, of how awkward it is seeing a girl that I used to talk to. It's almost like they see me, and they don't know what to say anymore. They may have treated me a way in the past, and it's like, 'Damn. I shouldn't have done that.' It's so many things running through my head. 'How do I approach this person now?' It's an interesting concept. I'm glad that record is picking up. It was slow at first, but it's a feel-good record." Drake and Timbaland previously worked together on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 track "Off That." Tim said he's been asked to contribute tracks to Drake's debut LP, Thank Me Later. "Working with Timbaland is always an honor," Drake said. "He's done so many great things. He's created moments for all of us in our lives — whether it dates back to the Missy [Elliott] and Aaliyah days, the Ginuwines. Then you talk about the hip-hop work. His own songs. He's given us a lot. It was great opportunity to work with him." Related Artists Drake Timbaland

Dame Dash Laughs Off Rumors That He's Broke MTV News - 115 days ago
Former Roc-A-Fella mogul drops latest album from the Black Keys on his new label this month.By Shaheem Reid Dame Dash Photo: MTV News Dame Dash isn't worried about rumors; he's just worried about how he looks in the photos that accompany the stories. "When I be in the newspaper, I just worry about what the picture looks like," he laughed. "The bigger the picture, the better. I don't even see the headline." He chuckles when he reads about his rumored financial status — and, judging by his space that houses an art gallery, two music studios, offices for his magazine and a television studio, he seems to be doing fine. "I have fun everyday," Dash said about his life post-Roc-A-Fella. "The problem is, I think people take themselves a little bit too serious. I'm happy to be a part of history so many different times in so many different ways. I'm from a place where you have your ups and your downs. That's not really what I'm concerned about. It don't matter. I'm Dame Dash broke, I'm Dame Dash not broke — I'm Dame Dash when I got some money. But we also know that when Dame Dash got some money, he's putting it into his businesses. I am a cake-aholic. My quality of living never really changes, ever! I've never had to sacrifice or compromise." These days, instead of Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek, Dame is spending plenty of time with the likes of Mos Def and Curren$y. No more Jay-Z, but he holds no grudges. There are worst things in life than splitting up a company. "Y'all actually seen a lot of my tragedies," Dash said. "I know what real pain feels like. Y'all seen me cry. Always, big shout out to Aaliyah. I ain't forget that. I still feel that everyday. All this other stuff, because these people wanna sell papers and say things, I don't care about that. I don't defend myself. Say what you want. I actually prefer it at times. For people to think [I'm in ruins], so I could have some fun. People be knocking my fun all the time. I wish they could have fun." On Black Friday, Dash is putting out the next album from the Black Keys, BlakRoc. The LP features collaborations with RZA and Raekwon from the Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def, Q-Tip and more. Related Artists Jay-Z

Aaliyah: Remembering Her Talent Eight Years On MTV News - 206 days ago
On the eighth anniversary of her untimely death, we look back on her accomplishments and wonder what might have been.By Jayson Rodriguez One of the last hits from Aaliyah's all-too-brief career was the track "More Than a Woman," released posthumously from her self-titled third LP. The song and the video both showcased Aaliyah Dana Haughton, then 22, at her finest: flirty, reserved, sultry and, most importantly, it left listeners and viewers with a palpable sense that there was indeed more to come from this talented artist. Unfortunately, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying her and her entourage crashed shortly after take off. Her death — which occurred exactly eight years ago — still feels like it happened entirely too soon. Ever since the Detroit singer and dancer debuted in 1994 with Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, we all saw Aaliyah blossom first hand. Her initial look of dark sunglasses and baggy clothes evolved into a more adult look on her next album, One In a Million. She was always beautiful, but later as a young woman she exuded the kind of appeal that was as sexy as a whisper in your ear — so subtle that she never had to overly point it out. She also possessed the type of talent and charisma that led many to believe her future was as bright as a supernova. "Aaliyah was one of the finest young women I have ever worked with. She was a consummate professional, an amazing talent with limitless potential and, most importantly, an exceptional person," Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who worked with the singer on the film "Romeo Must Die," said in a statement after her death. "Her passing is a huge loss to her many friends here at Warner Bros. and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family and to those who loved her as we did." Her credits are easy to remember: three albums that were each certified double-platinum along with the aforementioned "Romeo Must Die," which helped to put her on Hollywood's map. Another film, "Queen of the Damned," was released after she passed. Her legacy is slinkier — immense yet understated, just like her voice. Traces of it lie the way Ciara moved in the video for "Promise." It's there in Rihanna's runway-fashion sense. Keri Hilson's around-the-way persona and Nicole Scherzinger's simmering sexuality share a debt to her. And the sense of what her career could have ultimately become is evident in Beyoncé's multimedia presence. During Aaliyah's rise, she and her contemporaries shared a number of similarities, most notably an affinity for going by just one name: Brandy, Monica, Mya, etc. All of them did well from the very beginning. Since then, of course, they've continued to experience success, but each with the usual ups and downs that fame tends to dish out. Aaliyah undoubtedly would have gone on to accomplish more. But she always felt different, more mature than her age — and her ascent also felt more gradual and firm, and when she passed there was a sadness that resonated because she was set to soar. "I'll be more than a lover, more than a woman," she sang. "I'm gonna be more. I don't think you're ready." There truly was no way we could have been.
